Callum McGregor injury update as return timeline becomes clearer

Callum McGregor could make his return for Celtic FC as early as this weekend, with reports suggesting the captain is pushing to be fit for the trip to Dundee United.

He has missed the last two matches due to a calf injury, sitting out both the penalty shootout victory at Ibrox and the clash with Motherwell. While Celtic managed to get through those games, his absence was noticeable—particularly in midfield.

McGregor plays a key role in setting the tempo. He is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and keeps play ticking over. Without him, Celtic’s build-up can become slower, with other players forced to adapt to unfamiliar responsibilities. However, he has recently increased his training workload, and there is growing optimism that he could feature at Tannadice.

His potential return would be a major boost heading into the weekend. Away trips to Dundee United are rarely straightforward, with the tight pitch placing extra importance on midfield control and second balls. McGregor’s awareness and positioning are vital in handling those demands.

Even if he doesn’t start, simply being available again gives Celtic more flexibility. It provides Martin O’Neill with another option to influence the game as it unfolds.

Celtic have shown they can cope without their captain, but the difference is clear when he’s on the pitch. He connects defence to attack and ensures the team progresses smoothly up the field.

If he’s fit enough to play—even in a limited role—it could give Celtic the control they need in what could be a difficult and scrappy encounter.
