Frank Lampard delighted as Coventry City take advantage with emphatic win over Swansea City
Frank Lampard praised his Coventry City side for making the most of a key opportunity after their dominant 3-0 victory away at Swansea City strengthened their position at the top of the Championship.
The win lifted the Sky Blues to 80 points, creating a healthy gap over second-placed Middlesbrough FC, who were held to a draw by Blackburn Rovers. Meanwhile, promotion rivals Ipswich Town and Millwall FC shared the points in their clash, further boosting Coventry’s advantage.
Lampard admitted he and his players were fully aware of those earlier results and used them as motivation rather than an excuse to ease off. He stressed that the message to the squad was clear—capitalize on the moment and take control, rather than treat the game as a free opportunity with no pressure.
He felt his team responded exactly as he had hoped, approaching the match with the right mentality and backing it up with a strong performance on the pitch.
Reaching the 80-point mark, alongside scoring 81 goals this season, is something Lampard views as a major achievement. He highlighted the progress of a group that has largely stayed together, developing steadily and showing impressive consistency and unity.
Lampard also pointed out that Coventry’s rise is particularly notable given the club’s journey, having climbed through the divisions rather than benefiting from recent Premier League status or parachute payments. He praised the players for their work ethic and commitment, which he believes have been central to their success.
Despite the strong position, Lampard was keen to keep expectations in check. He warned that the Championship can quickly punish any complacency, urging his players to remain grounded and focused.
For now, though, Coventry find themselves in a commanding position, with confidence growing and momentum firmly on their side.
