Martin O’Neill speaks out as Celtic fans aim anger at board after Dundee United loss

Celtic’s title defence suffered a major setback after a 2-0 defeat to Dundee United at Tannadice on Saturday.

Martin O’Neill watched his side fall flat in Tayside, offering little resistance as a second-half brace from United sent the Hoops back to Glasgow empty-handed. The result leaves Celtic five points behind Hearts and two adrift of Rangers, with O’Neill left to reflect on a damaging defeat that also sparked angry scenes among the travelling support, who directed frustration toward club board members.

Reacting to the fan backlash, O’Neill admitted it was a familiar response after poor results. He acknowledged the team had let supporters down, both those in attendance and those watching from afar, following a performance that failed to meet expectations.

The Celtic boss was visibly frustrated when questioned about the tense scenes post-match, as fans voiced their anger toward the board. Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, journalist Jonathan Sutherland highlighted the level of discontent in the stands, describing a strong sense of disappointment among supporters.

On the match itself, O’Neill pointed to Celtic’s inability to turn possession into clear chances. Despite dominating territory in the first half, his side struggled to break down United’s defence.

He admitted the team failed to adjust in the second half, with the hosts capitalising and ultimately deserving the win. The defeat, he said, was a significant concern and a heavy blow to their ambitions.

With just two matches remaining before the top-six split and only 21 points left to play for, Celtic’s hopes of another dramatic title comeback are fading fast.
The loss also marked O’Neill’s first-ever defeat to Dundee United during his time at the club—one that could prove decisive in the title race.
