Celtic
Breaking News: On this, the day of the Celtic transfer deadline, news broke of bids from Matt O’Riley, a top striker joining the club, a link to PSG, an exit worth £2 million, a Left leave-back agreement might be sealed, a loan for a winger might be achieved
On the last day of the January transfer window, Celtic is likely to have a lot of activity. Deals could be made right up until 11.30pm, which is the limit.
So far, the Scottish champions have only brought in one new player: winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna for £3 million. On the other hand, defender Yosuke Ideguchi has left for good, moving to Vissel Kobe in the J-League for about £870,000.
A second new player has been decided upon. Adam Idah, a striker from the Republic of Ireland, will finish his loan move from Norwich City after landing at Glasgow Airport on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old will play for the league leaders until the end of the season, but there will be no chance to buy.
Even though Idah has been a Canaries replacement more often than he has started this season, he has scored eight goals. Chris Sutton, a former Celtic and Norwich striker-turned-expert who wrote on X, “I’m not sure with the greatest respect it’s an upgrade on Oh…”, doesn’t think the move is a good one. Idah needs to leave Norwich. He has potential, but he’s had promise for years. He’s still in the development stage and a long way from being finished.
In addition to adding to his attack, manager Brendan Rodgers still wants to add to his defense. He may make a late move for a left back to cover for Greg Taylor, who is currently hurt. Celtic was linked with Tiago Araujo of Estoril earlier in the window, but now nothing is happening. They also made an inquiry about Liverpool’s Owen Beck, but the 21-year-old went back to Dundee on loan for the first half of the season, so the move was turned down.
On the day before the transfer deadline, new players have been added. Celtic were allegedly contacted by representatives of PSG left back Layvin Kurzawa to let them know that the player was available. The 31-year-old has 13 games for France, with the most recent one coming in 2019. However, he hasn’t played much in the last two seasons, starting just six times during a season-long loan at Fulham and then only once as a substitute for PSG so far this season. He is an experienced player who could cost Celtic a lot of money because he joined PSG from Monaco in 2015 for €23 million.
Left back for Wolves There have also been rumors about Huge Bueno, but sources say that the Premier League club does not want to let the Spain Under-21 international leave this window. Celtic will probably keep looking for a left back until the deadline, most likely on loan, but there are no promises.
As for players leaving, midfielder David Turnbull is almost done with a £2 million deal to move permanently to Cardiff City. Turnbull’s deal ends in the summer, but the Bluebirds want to sign the 24-year-old now to help their chances of making the Championship promotion play-offs.
Marco Tilio has agreed to go back on loan to Melbourne City for the rest of the season. He failed to make an impact at Celtic after moving there for £1 million in the summer. Mikey Johnston, another winger, could also leave Parkhead on the last day of the season. West Brom are said to be interested in loaning the Republic of Ireland international. Lecce wants to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke, but the Hoops seem to have stopped the Serie A team from signing the Swedish defender because they are worried about Cameron Carter-Vickers’ health. Volos FC in Greece made Celtic a loan offer for midfielder James McCarthy, but Celtic turned it down. The 33-year-old hasn’t played in 15 months and will be free to leave if a good deal comes in.
Midfielder Matt O’Riley is one person who will not be able to leave, unless something very different happens. Atletico Madrid’s £20 million offer for the Denmark international has already been turned down. Other teams across Europe are also interested, and bids can still be made until the end of the window, but Celtic have made it clear that they will not be listening to any offers for their star player right now.
