Celtic FC injury latest: four players return boost while three ruled out

Celtic FC have endured a season disrupted by injuries, but there are signs the situation is finally improving as key players edge closer to returns.

Throughout a turbulent title defence, boss Martin O’Neill has been without several crucial figures at different stages, including star duo Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers, both of whom remain sidelined until next season.

However, there is renewed optimism at Lennoxtown. Defenders Alistair Johnston and Callum Osmand are nearing full fitness, while record signing Arne Engels is also closing in on a return—offering a timely boost as Celtic chase down Hearts and Rangers in the title race.

Veteran goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel looks set to miss the remainder of the campaign, and potentially his Celtic career, after confirming he faces up to a year out with a serious shoulder injury. The 39-year-old has already undergone surgery and is out of contract this summer.

Johnston, who has been sidelined since October with a hamstring injury, is now in the final stages of recovery and could return in April, providing much-needed reinforcement at the back. That boost is crucial, especially with January signing Julián Araujo ruled out for up to eight weeks with a quad problem, leaving his availability for the run-in uncertain.

Defensive concerns have been further compounded by a setback for youngster Donovan, who limped off against Dundee United FC and has since withdrawn from Scotland Under-21 duty.

Meanwhile, Carter-Vickers continues his recovery from a long-term Achilles injury, with no return expected until next season—a major blow for both club and country ambitions.

There is brighter news in midfield, though, with Engels back in full training after a thigh issue. The Belgian could even make a return as early as this weekend, offering a significant lift during the decisive final stretch of the campaign.

With their title hopes hanging in the balance, Celtic will be hoping these returning players can provide the spark needed to keep their ambitions alive.
