Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag explains Rasmus Hojlund and two other Manchester United players’ celebratory picture
Rasmus Hojlund scored the winning goal in all three games. Alejandro Garnacho scored his seventh goal of the season against West Ham, and Kobbie Mainoo scored his first two goals for the club against Newport and Wolves.
When Garnacho scored his first goal in the 3-0 win over West Ham, the three young players posed together on an advertising board at Old Trafford. Garnacho copied the joy of West Ham winger Mohammed Kudus and called it “inspiring.”
In the last 18 games, Garnacho has been the starter, and since coming back from illness, Mainoo has played in 11 of the last 15 games. The midfielder hurt his ankle in United’s second pre-season tour game against Real Madrid in July. He couldn’t play for four months.
Ten Hag said of United’s brief comeback, “I have to analyze, be clinical, and stay calm.” “Now our team is balanced on the field.” We can play better, and you can see that we’re getting better.
“We bought players in the summer for the future, and we also chose to give players who deserve it, like Garnacho and Mainoo, chances to play on the first team.”
“Mainoo gets hurt really badly in the second game against Madrid.” Then you have to change the plans you have. Hojlund had a time; he came in late and was young, but you can see that he is getting better.
“If he has a stable team behind him with set routines, they will serve him better, and the front line will be balanced.” Every opponent sees them as a threat, and you can see that they enjoy playing football and making their opponents work hard. They want to do it together.
“I think the picture showed a lot of the three kids having fun together. It’s about the team, not one person. That’s what I saw today. It looked like a group. 11 on defense and 11 on attack. I thought it was fun to watch.
“That was the plan before the season; we saw how good those players could be.” They need games and experience, and the only way to get these things is to play on the first team, face the competition, and then learn how to adapt and have the right mindset. They keep doing this every day with the goal of working together and getting better. Then I’m sure they can get to very high levels.
However, they need players with a lot of knowledge who have done everything to help them and put them in the right spots. Right time and the right way of thinking.”
