REVEALED: Thirteen VAR choices were wrong, and clubs like Celtic FC, Aberdeen, Rangers and Hearts are among the teams who were affected

It comes after only THREE were found in the last checks.

The SFA’s separate VAR review team has found that 13 calls in the second round of Premiership games were wrong.

The review process found that a lot more bad calls were made than in the first round of games that were looked at, when only three wrong calls were pointed out, and two of those involved the same club in Dundee. Of the 13, Alistair Johnston’s mistake in the December 30 game between Celtic and Rangers was one of the most controversial. There was no penalty.

In that case, the panel said that there should have been an on-field review, but an offside would have been given in the buildup. Liam Boyce should have been given a penalty kick against Motherwell at Fir Park, but Ross McCausland SHOULD NOT have been given one for Gers against Livingston.

Additionally, Jose Cifuentes was given an unnecessary red card, and Beni Baningime, Will Dennis, and Marley Watkins should have all been sent off for actions that should have led to them.

There have been 785 VAR reviews in the first two rounds of games. Most of them were “silent checks,” which meant that neither the referee nor the VAR officials had to do anything.

After the first two full rounds of SPFL Premiership games in the 2023–24 season, the SFA said in a release, “The VAR Independent Review Panel (IRP) has met to discuss Key Match Incidents (KMIs).”
