Ibrox was closed to Celtic fans today for the Old Firm match against Rangers. Here’s why.
Rangers and Celtic played to an exciting 3-3 draw on Sunday. Brendan Rodgers’ team is still in first place in the Scottish Premiership.
The guests scored first after just 21 seconds, when Daizen Maeda’s strange, deflected shot went in.
In the 34th minute, Matt O’Riley scored a spot that made the score 2-0 for his team.
In the second half, James Tavernier scored a penalty for the home team to tie the game. Abdallah Sima then scored the equalizer.
Sub in the second half Adam Idah put Celtic back ahead, but Rabbi Matondo scored for Rangers to get even.
Every time Celtic scored, there was complete silence because there was a ticket dispute between the two teams that kept visiting fans from entering Ibrox.
Celtic and Rangers agreed in March 2023 that no away fans would be allowed into their stadiums because of “safety and security” worries.
At Ibrox and Celtic Park, there have been a number of problems during games in the past when away fans were present.
Over the last few seasons, Celtic and Rangers’ away allocations have gone down.
At first, Rangers limited the number of fans allowed to just 800. Celtic did the same for games at Celtic Park, before away fans were not allowed.
A deal between Celtic and Rangers means that away fans will be able to watch Old Firm games again next season.
The problem has been solved after talks. There will be 2,500 away fans at each venue, which is about 5% of the total number of seats.
Talks to find an answer have been going on between the Scottish Premiership Football League (SPFL) since the end of last season.
An SPFL statement said, “Following talks with both clubs, the SPFL is pleased to confirm that Rangers FC and Celtic FC will allocate tickets for away fans at a rate of about 5% for SPFL games between the two clubs.”
“This will start with the 2024–25 Scottish Premiership season, as long as all the necessary conditions are met at both Ibrox and Celtic Park.”
“It does not affect the remaining two league matches between the clubs in season 2023/24, which will remain at a zero allocation for away supporters.”
