The amazing fight that Newcastle United has been waging against all the odds this season resumed at St. James’ Park, where Tottenham Hotspur was given a tremendous thrashing.

On paper, this appeared to be a challenging test for the Magpies, as they were going up against a Spurs squad that was in the running for the Champions League. However, Eddie Howe’s team made it appear simpler than it actually was at times. During a rout that took place on a bright and beautiful afternoon in Tyneside, Alexander Isak (2), Anthony Gordon, and Fabian Schar all contributed to the goals that were scored.

This was a day in which James Maddison had the opportunity to experience what he had missed out on by choosing to move to Spurs rather than Newcastle Football Club in the summer of last year. Although Maddison had a difficult time displaying his best form, players such as Gordon and Isak brought their game to the next level, leading Newcastle to an outstanding victory that placed them in sixth place.

The Magpies got off to a strong start in the game, with Gordon moving forward and seeing a cross cleared before Elliot Anderson’s header was blocked in the first couple of minutes of the match. When Brennan Johnson crossed the ball from the right side of the field seven minutes into the game, Spurs exerted some early pressure of their own. However, Timo Werner’s shot from inside the box was a woeful miss that went over the top of the net.

In situations where they were not in possession of the ball, Newcastle used a back five, with Anderson and Jacob Murphy playing the role of wing-backs. This strategy proved to be very effective for Howe. With the inverted full-backs causing turmoil in the rematch in December, when Spurs won 4-1, the pair was given positions in an effort to reduce the threat posed by Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie. This was done in an effort to minimize the negative impact of their presence.

After keeping Spurs at bay for the first half an hour of the match, Newcastle then proceeded to unleash some of their own punishment on the contest. Initially, Gordon captured the ball in the middle of the field, and then, at the half-hour mark, he passed it to Isak. Following that, Isak maneuvered around Micky van de Ven, who had fallen on his backside, and hammered the ball past Guglielmo Vicario, who was playing goalkeeper for the Spurs.

The Newcastle team, which had been patiently waiting for their time, increased their lead within two minutes of the kickoff. Porro made a terrible mistake and lost possession of the ball, which allowed Gordon to put the ball in the back of the net. Van de Ven then slid by him, causing the Dutchman to experience a second horrific moment in as many minutes.

Within the span of ninety-five seconds, Newcastle had achieved complete dominance in a critically important Premier League match. Despite the fact that Isak had a few more opportunities to stretch the lead even further, Spurs managed to hold on.

Despite the fact that Newcastle had just 33% control of the ball when the game was over, nobody could quarrel with the manner in which they had handled the significant events that occurred in the first half. It was necessary for Spurs to have a speedy response in the second quarter, and Ange Postecoglu was the one who sent the London team out of the game early.

At the fifty-minute mark, Werner took a shot that was curled toward Martin Dubravka, who was able to keep the ball in the net on the second attempt. However, the game was just as enjoyable as it had been more than a minute earlier.

As Bruno Guimaraes passed the ball across the middle of the field for Isak to rush on to, the third goal scored by Newcastle appeared to be a straightforward move. However, the pass was technically flawless, and the striker’s ice-cold demeanor was evident for all to witness. One minute and fifty-one seconds into the match, the Swedish superstar sped through the defense before taking a touch to compose himself and then calmly applying the finish at the Gallowgate End.

By making a triple move, Spurs made a last-ditch effort to try to get themselves back into the competition and come back stronger than before. Dejan Kulusevski, Pieree-Emile Hojbjerg, and Pape Mata Sarr were brought in to take the positions of Son Heung-Min, Yves Bissouma, and Rodrigo Bentancur.

James Maddison, who plays for England, received a caution for a reckless challenge on Jacob Murphy, but he could have been dismissed from the game quite easily if he had been punished for his foul on Gordon in the first half. Just after the hour mark, Anderson made an attempt to get in on the action by cutting inside and forcing the goalkeeper to make a save.

The decision that Maddison made to select Spurs over Newcastle was brought up multiple times throughout the afternoon. At the 68-minute mark, Maddison attempted to take a shot from a long range but was unsuccessful in hitting the target. At the opposite end of the field, Anderson attempted to score a goal by going outside the box, but Vicario was not bothered by his effort.

After Jacob Murphy, a former Norwich player, complained of cramping, Howe decided to take him out of the game at the 78-minute mark and subsequently substitute Tino Livramento in his stead. A corner kick taken by Newcastle resulted in Emil Krafth taking a shot at the goal with ten minutes remaining on the clock, however the ball hit the bottom of the post instead of the goal.
