Concerns have been made by Gary Lineker and Danny Murphy about Newcastle United’s away form as they try to make it to Europe. Last night, the Magpies lost 2-0 at Crystal Palace, where they played second-best.

United had gone four games without losing before Jean-Philippe Mateta scored two goals in the second half. Eddie Howe’s team has now lost eight of their last eleven Premier League away games (won three).

Yesterday night on Match of the Day, Murphy said, “I think it’s more their away form.” They’ve been great at home this season, but they’ve had a terrible time on the road.

There was no doubt that presenter Lineker agreed with Murphy’s assessment: “They are a different side away from home, no question about that.”

When Crystal Palace wasn’t being filmed, they gave Newcastle the wrong kind of response at the end of the game.

United moved ahead of Newcastle to sixth place after coming back from behind to beat Sheffield United, who were in last place. United is three points behind Manchester United with five games left.

Howe said this about their poor performance at Palace: “We were disappointing today.” We never really got into our best flow.

“Disappointed, especially with the first half hour. We were not even close to where we wanted to be. We were let down by our technical work today; we usually do better.”

The manager of United wants his players to respond strongly, and this weekend they play host to Sheffield United. “There is a big opportunity for us, we can’t let [our season] peter out and we’ve got a big chance to quickly bounce back,” said the coach.
