English sports broadcaster Gary Lineker and Ian Wright verdict on Erling Haaland been angry over his substitution during Manchester City’s 5-1 win over Wolves
Gary Lineker is undecided whether or not he accepts Pep Guardiola and Ian Wright’s explanation of the reason why Erling Haaland was upset when he was substituted during Manchester City’s 5-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Haaland was back to his lethal best on Saturday evening, and he stole the show by scoring four goals in the thrashing of Gary O’Neil’s team. This performance made headlines when it occurred. After completing his duties, the Norwegian center forward was taken out of the game and replaced by Julian Alvarez with approximately eight minutes left in normal time.
Before making his way to the bench, it appeared as though Haaland was involved in a heated argument with Guardiola as he was leaving the field where the game was being played. One of the questions that was asked of the City manager after the game was concerning the forward’s response to being substituted.
The response that Guardiola provided was as follows: “There were a lot of long balls into the channels where he won the position and was being pulled by the opponent, but it was never [given as] a foul.” I can understand him when he is level with the shoulders, but there were instances when he won the position and at the same time he was being pulled.
“He fell, and there were occasions when it was not a foul that was given. It happens a number of times during each and every game. In spite of the fact that he was a little bit irritated by these activities, I can assure you that he was quite delighted today.
Wright concurred with Guardiola’s theory after taking a look at the clip that was broadcast on Match of the Day. According to the former striker for Arsenal, “I believe he was upset because he wasn’t getting much from the referee and [because of] how he was being played by [Max] Kilman despite the fact that he was playing well.”
On the other hand, Lineker was not as satisfied, and he said, “I believe he did not want to come off.” Despite the fact that he stated that wasn’t what it was, and this is something that I completely understand [not wanting to come off].
Manchester City’s victory brought them back to within one point of Arsenal, who had earlier in the day defeated AFC Bournemouth by a score of 3-0.
