They beat Brentford 4–2, which kept their hopes of going to Europe alive for another week.

They got off to a slow start, and they could have been behind if not for a VAR call and a save by Nick Pope. A Harvey Barnes drive in the middle of the first half calmed them down, though.

Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak scored goals after Barnes’s first one. Isak scored a third goal, which was his 24th of the season. Newcastle only needs to win this game to stay in seventh place.

Vitaly Janelt scored a goal in the 48th minute to make things a little harder for Brentford in the second half, bringing the score back to 3-1. It got tense with 20 minutes left when Yoan Wissa scored an amazing goal, but Bruno scored from close range to give Newcastle a two-goal lead again.

Here’s how the players did all around:

Nick Pope 8

Made some big saves in both halves, including a great diving stop that kept Ivan Toney out. In front of England manager Gareth Southgate, it was a good show.

Emil Krafth 7

He put in a good shift, but his team had some trouble in the second half.

Fabian Schar 7

Got stronger as the game went on. Some very important blocks.

Dan Burn 7

After some early nerves from teammates, a calm enough presence in the middle of defense. Has used Row Z when necessary, almost cutting off a reporter’s cap in the process.

Lewis Hall 7

After a rough start, make things better by being a threat down the left side.

Sean Longstaff 7

A clean screen with some important catches. It’s too bad that a goal was called off.

Bruno Guimaraes 10

He put on a great man of the match show to show how important he is to the team. Two helps and a goal were enough to prove it.

Joelinton 7

Even though he missed a terrible chance and got a yellow card, he quickly became a bigger physical threat in the middle of the field.

Jacob Murphy 9
Helped set up two goals and scored one himself. It was a good shift for the Murphy family in London on a busy weekend after brother Josh scored at Wembley.

Harvey Barnes 8

A good game all around, with a key headed goal and good scoring play to end the season on a high note.

Alexander Isak 9

Did one, scored one, and then hit a well-placed free kick that Bruno tapped in.

Subs

This is Miguel Almiron for J. Murphy 68.

Evans Elliot (for Barnes 68)

Kieran Trippier (in place of Joelinton)

This is Callum Wilson for Isak 80.

This is Paul Dummett for Schar 90.
