The Portugal team for the European Championship does not have defender Matheus Nunes, who plays for Manchester City.
They didn’t bring Matheus Nunes to Euro 2024 because they didn’t think he would play enough.
Nunes has been a part of his national team for almost four years and scored in a 5-2 win over Sweden in March in their most recent game. But the midfielder from Manchester City didn’t make it to the summer event. Instead, Ruben Neves from Al Hilal was picked.

Speaking about the choice, Roberto Martinez, the manager of Portugal, said that Nunes had shown what he could do, but he wanted players with more game time and form. This year, Nunes has had a hard time settling in at the Etihad. He has only played one of the last 15 games.
“This shows the work that we’ve done for almost 18 months,” Martinez said. “At that time, Ruben Neves, Otavio, and Matheus Nunes all showed what they could do for the Selecao.”
This isn’t about the level of competition; it’s about the number of minutes, games played, form, and place on the team. We see Otavio and Ruben as very important to our team’s room.
Nunes upset Wolves fans when he went on strike last summer to speed up his move to City. The Blues were interested in him after being interested in Declan Rice and Lucas Paqueta. In his first season under Pep Guardiola, the 25-year-old had some good games, but not enough to play often, and he has now lost his spot at the European Championship.
