Steven Gerrard said that after being fired from Aston Villa in October 2022, he went to Sir Alex Ferguson, the legendary manager of Manchester United, for help.
After taking over from Dean Smith in November 2021, Gerrard did a great job in the West Midlands, leading the team from the relegation zone to a 14th-place finish.
Bad things happened in Gerrard’s first full season as manager; they only won two of their first 12 league games, which led to his firing and the coming of Unai Emery.
After taking almost a year off to heal from his first big mistake as a coach, the former Liverpool midfielder got his next job as a manager at Saudi Arabian team Al-Ettifaq last summer.
Ferguson was the one who helped the 43-year-old man through this. Gerrard called out to Ferguson as he tried to get his managerial career back on track.
When asked about the difficult process, Gerrard told The Telegraph, “It was tough.” It made me hurt. It was real to me. But what people need to understand is that I would not be Steven Gerrard if I didn’t feel that, if I didn’t take that personally, and if I didn’t take full responsibility for that. That’s because I will always own football, whether it’s professional or just something I love.
