So far in 2024, LA Galaxy has done better than expected. They are currently fourth in the Western Conference and have only lost three of their first seventeen games.
There is a good chance that Greg Vanney’s team will soon sign German international Marco Reus. They have already signed team leader Riqui Puig to a new long-term deal. But the Galaxy, who are the most successful team in Major League Soccer, aren’t done yet.
AS USA has learned from people close to the club that Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is the next player the Galaxy want to sign. This could bring him back together with his close friend Reus. Lewandowski still has two years left on his deal with Barcelona, but the Catalan club would probably let him go for a small fee to get rid of his ridiculously high salary.
Is it possible for LA Galaxy to pay for Robert Lewandowski?
The Galaxy have won five MLS Cups, which is the most in the league. However, they haven’t been winners since David Beckham and Landon Donovan’s team did it ten years ago. In the last seven seasons, they’ve only made the playoffs twice, which is a bad stretch for the famous team.
The Galaxy’s front office took bold steps to improve the team for the 2024 season. They broke the club’s trade record by paying $10.1 million and $9.2 million to sign forwards Gabriel Pec and Joseph Paintsil. How could the Galaxy afford to get even stronger when they’ve already spent so much money?
There would be little to no transfer fee for Lewandowski in any deal. The star player is 35 years old and not very valuable as a trade target. Barcelona would probably be happy to get rid of his salary. Lewandowski’s price demands might be a problem, but the Galaxy have the eighth-highest salary of any team in 2024. Forbes recently did a study that put the Galaxy’s projected value at $950 million, which makes them the third-richest club in MLS.
At the moment, Riqui Puig is the only adult Designated Player at the club. This means that Reus and Lewandowski can both play. If the Galaxy can get both players this summer, it would be a huge coup, but it would also be similar to Inter Miami’s business in 2023, where they tried to get former partners to make a better offer for highly sought-after players.
