William Saliba, an Arsenal center back, says he is one of the top three defenders in the Premier League right now after a great season at the Emirates Stadium.
This season, the 23-year-old played all 50 games for the Gunners and all 90 minutes in the Premier League as Arsenal only gave up 29 goals. This was five less than the champions Manchester City, and Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes got a lot of praise for it.
Before going to Germany for the European Championships, Saliba talked to L’Équipe and said that he was one of the best defensive players in his class. The French player knew he needed to work on some things this season, though.
“I think I am in the top three [defenders in the league],” he stated. “Our defense was the best at the end.”
“I see a lot of games.” I’m a very humble person, but I was one of the top three players last season and again this season.
„I need to keep working to get even better […] in terms of focus, I’m a lot better. I used to be able to play a great game, but during one part of the game, I fell asleep. That’s not true anymore. I’m always on guard.”
Rio Ferdinand, who used to play center back for Manchester United, had a lot of good things to say about Saliba back in October. “I have to say I watched the game [Arsenal’s win over City] and Saliba, it’s these games where you see if the boys have the temperament, and that counts for a lot in these big games,” he said on the Vibe with Five show.
“He’s cool with or without the ball.” In eight games, I don’t think anyone has been able to get past him.
“At one point, I paused the game and played it again for my son, who plays center back.” It was me who said, “Watch this.” The ball is played, and he’s on the halfway line with [Erling] Haaland. All center backs can’t sleep at night because of what he did last season.
In fact, Saliba, Haaland’s face would have been the last thing he saw before going to sleep, not his wife. Someone plays the ball past the back four past the halfway line. He and Haaland are right next to each other during the game, and he just bounces Haaland, who goes over.
Please don’t put me in a foot race over those little things. You could, but you don’t have to. A few dark arts have been added to his game by him. He’s also cute around the box, and he’s cool under pressure. He’s happy to be in charge of kicking the ball out sometimes.
“His relationship with Gabriel is really taking off.” He doesn’t do what he does without a good partner, so you should also give Gabriel flowers. He is the partner on the A-side.”
