People didn’t like Martin Dubravka, the goalie for Newcastle United, after Slovakia lost 2-1 to Ukraine at Euro 2024.
They kept a clean sheet and beat Belgium in their first game, but Ukraine came back to win in Dusseldorf, which was a disappointment for Slovakia and Dubravka.
Ivan Schranz scored his second goal of the tournament early in the game to put Slovakia ahead. But goals from Mykola Shaparenko and Roman Yaremchuk in the second half helped Ukraine win all three points in Group E.
Even though Dubravka didn’t have much to do with Ukraine’s equalizer, former England and Manchester City goalie Joe Hart criticized him after the game. It took the Newcastle goalkeeper a moment to decide what to do, so he let Yaremchuk’s shot go through him. Hart said on BBC’s live show, “That’s a great touch from Yaremchuk. Dubravka needs to wait and see what he does.”
“He thinks, ‘Can I come [for the ball]?’ because if the touch is big, he can claim it.” No, you’d have to stick him in the middle.
“That was a nice touch, but Dubravka is going to be very upset about what comes next.” It’s 80/20 in his favor if he stands tall when the ball is brought down, but he ends up doing nothing at all.
Slovakia’s last game in the group is next Wednesday against Romania, and they want to win to make it to the round of 16.
Dubravka has been tipped to take Hart’s place as Celtic’s goalie for the 2024–25 season. Hart no longer plays professional football, and Dubravka’s future at Newcastle is unclear.
People have asked the Slovakian goalkeeper about his future while he is at Euro 2024, but he has made it clear that for now, his only goal is to help his country win.
The Newcastle goalie said after the win over Belgium, “I don’t really know, and to be honest, my mind right now is on my job here.” “I just want to enjoy this because it’s so important for our country.”
“We don’t get to play in tournaments like this very often, so I’m trying to take it all in.”
Last week, Dubravka said, “To be honest, I no longer care what happens.” I stood up for myself and did my best for Newcastle.
“I won’t be able to stop them if they choose to bring someone else.”
