The decision to award England a penalty in their Euro 2024 semi-final match against the Netherlands has been met with criticism from fans.

England had been behind earlier in the match due to a stunning goal from Xavi Simons. However, they were awarded a controversial spot kick when Harry Kane collided with the ground prior to the 20-minute mark.

Denzel Dumfries, a Dutch defender, was booked for his involvement in the goal, which was awarded following a VAR review, after the Bayern Munich forward had already missed his attempt.

Referee Felix Zwayer had initially authorized the goal kick; however, he reconsidered his decision subsequent to being directed to the monitor.

Jamie Carragher, a former England defender who has since transitioned to a role as a commentator, was the first to criticize the incident on social media. He maintained that the challenge was “never a penalty,” despite the fact that his fellow countrymen benefited.

Gary Neville, on the other hand, characterized the call as a “absolute disgrace” in the context of ITV punditry.

Another fan expressed their dissatisfaction with football by stating on X, which was previously known as Twitter, “If that’s a penalty, I’m done watching football.”

Someone else wrote, “That is not considered a penalty in my opinion.” “Too soft!”

A third individual composed the following statement: “It is not even a penalty.” Anything that will assist Gareth in maintaining his employment.

Nevertheless, Kane converted from the penalty spot, securing his third goal of the tournament by eclipsing Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Verburggen had attempted to divert Kane’s attention prior to the strike, but Kieran Trippier was present to separate the two players.

Kane appeared to have kicked into Dumfries with his high shot, but the referee determined that he had been struck during the execution of the shot, resulting in his fall to the ground.

“Never a penalty in any version of the sport at any point in history,” wrote another fan in response to the decision. That is an absurd decision.

Another individual commented, “Harry Kane can score penalties by kicking opponents.” The character is unparalleled.

England consistently dominated the first half, with numerous opportunities for scoring. However, they were tied at the interval as a result of Simons and Kane’s goals.

Both teams were competing for a berth in the final on Sunday, where they would face Spain.
