Newcastle United didn’t have Lloyd Kelly for their pre-season game at Hull City on Saturday.
Kelly went to the Adidas headquarters in Germany last week, but he didn’t play in the 3-1 win over SpVgg Unterhaching that was played behind closed doors. He was also given more rest before Sunday’s trip to Tokyo.
After being let go by AFC Bournemouth this summer, the 25-year-old joined Newcastle. He is the club’s only outfield addition from last season’s first-team group. It makes sense that everyone wants to see the defender play, but fans who are traveling to the MKM Stadium and people who are watching online will have to wait a little longer.
According to reports inside the club, Kelly has trained with the first team at Benton during the week. He is still getting fitter though as he gets used to his new home. Eddie Howe and his teaching staff are very strict about fitness, and it took some new players, like Anthony Gordon and Lewis Hall, some time to get used to them.
Howe said while he was in Germany, “Lloyd Kelly is fit and fine; we’re just being careful around him.”
Kelly is likely to play for Newcastle before the Premier League season starts on August 17 against Southampton. Urawa Red Diamonds and Yokohama F. Marinos are the teams the Magpies play in Japan. On August 9 and 10, they play Girona and Brest in a single Sela Weekender match.
