They lost 3-2 to AC Milan at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night, which was their second straight exhibition loss.
In the 19th minute, Erling Haaland scored the first goal for the defending Premier League winners. But Lorenzo Colombo, 22, scored two goals in four minutes to turn the game around for Milan.
City, whose team was heavy on young players, lost control of the game and only managed three shots on goal. However, James McAtee’s header in the 56th minute tied the game and put City on the path to a draw.
Milan, on the other hand, kept the pressure on their opponents and deservedly won in the end when Marco Nasti scored a goal even though Ederson got a hand on it.
Pep Guardiola won’t be too upset about this late July result, since USA star Christian Pulisic only showed up late. But here are Jake Nisse’s picks for who won and lost in New York.
He was there for 45 minutes before he left before City and Milan changed kits, but he made his mark. He will feel bad that he didn’t add a second after Lorenzo Colombo made a terrible pass backwards, which put the striker near his own goal.
Haaland played like he always does, and he gave the American fans a goal to cheer for.
Bobb was City’s most dangerous player that night. He set up Haaland’s goal from the right side.
He was always running at defenders and often got by them easily. In the first half, he should have scored after moving to the left and setting up a pass and receive with Maximo Perrone.
After the game, Pep Guardiola was full of praise for him, and you think the 21-year-old could become a regular player this season.
Prize winner: Samuel Chukwueze 8/10
Colombo scored Milan’s first two goals, but Chukwueze worked hard to set them up.
From his inside-left position, the Nigerian made two identical passes to his teammate, sending two beautiful crosses to the back post for his partner to score.
There is a real threat, and the answer shows it.
Who lost? Jack Grealish 4/10
You would have liked to see Grealish do more attacking on a team full of kids (he, Haaland, Bobb, and Lewis were the only experienced first-teamers in the outfield), but he was mostly unnoticeable in New York.
Grealish was still “step by step” away from being fully fit and performing at his best, and that was clear when the younger Bobb was named the best City midfielder.
Toward the end of the second half, he went all the way to the City goal to touch the ball a few times, and that pretty much summed up his night.
Not Good: Rico Lewis 5/10
The young fullback didn’t have the best night because he let Chukwueze use his left foot to set up his first goal and wasn’t covering anyone during Milan’s second goal.
In truth, he also made a good block from the top of the box in the second half, but Milan scored two goals from crosses that came from his left side.
lasted the whole 90 minutes, but it could have been better.
Kalvin Phillips is the loser. 5/10
The overlooked man for City only played in the second half, but he caused two very bad moments.
In the first one, the defender lost the ball right in front of his own box at a very slow moment. Milan almost scored, but City eventually blocked their opponents’ view.
He was in unfamiliar territory in the second one. Late in the second half, he found room in the box and got his chest on a pass, but he tried (and failed) to get the ball to fall for him in a somewhat clumsy way.
For Milan’s third and final goal, City had no answer. He didn’t get a shot off at that time.
