This afternoon, all eyes are on Celtic star Matt O’Riley after news spread that talks with Brighton & Hove Albion about a possible summer move are still going on.
The Premier League club has been interested in the Danish player for a long time, and Fabian Hurzeler wants to get his life in order on the South Coast.
To Celtic fans, O’Riley is one of the most important players at the club, and it would be terrible to lose him this summer. Atalanta has had several bids turned down for the player. Southampton and Juventus are also interested in the 23-year-old.
Even though there were rumors, he was a big reason why the Bhoys beat Kilmarnock 4-0. Still, it’s not clear where this development could lead yet.
In response to the news of his departure, Chris Sutton has said what he thinks, and the former Celtic player hasn’t held back.
Matt O’Riley is told to aim higher by Chris Sutton.
On the social media site X, Sutton told O’Riley to “set his sights higher” than coming to Brighton this summer and stay at Celtic unless a bigger club comes in for him.
He said it all: “With all due respect to Brighton, who are a great club, I think Matt O’Riley should set his sights higher…” He should give it one more shot in the Champions League with this Celtic team… Stay one more season unless it’s a big move…
It’s hard to disagree with what Sutton says. There are a lot of teams that want to sign O’Riley, but not many of them can give the prestige of playing in the new Champions League format this season.
On the other hand, money can often decide what to do in these cases. It’s just the way the game is played today that Celtic can’t afford to pay Premier League rates.
O’Riley isn’t motivated by money; he has planned his future by making smart decisions, like leaving Fulham in 2021 to try to get into the first team at MK Dons.
As fans, we need to hope that he sees Parkhead as the best place for him to keep growing. Whether he will or not is a different question. In the coming weeks, we’ll find out the answer.
