Barcelona has already announced the signing of Dani Olmo. Now they are turning their attention to the exits, which have been mostly quiet in the first half of the transfer window.
There is less than a month left, and the Catalans need to close sales quickly. Clement Lenglet is one of the most likely players to be leaving.
In fact, Hansi Flick did plan for the French back to play some minutes in preseason. After all that, the center-back was never going to play for the red-and-blue team once the season started.
Is the deal done?
Early this morning, news came out that Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, both in La Liga, wanted to sign Lenglet.
However, Villarreal sources say that Lenglet’s move to Atletico Madrid is a “done deal” and that he already has an understanding with Los Rojiblancos. This is in line with what Ruben Uria said.
As you might expect, this is a huge development after hearing that Diego Simeone approved the deal. It pretty much ends Lenglet’s six-year relationship with Barcelona.
It’s important to note, though, that the two teams still need to agree on the terms of the transfer.
A cash problem was solved.
Barcelona has been trying for years to get rid of the French defense. The reason they were so set on firing him was both because he wasn’t part of the manager’s plans and because he was costing them money.
Even though the 29-year-old isn’t a regular member of the team, his pay has put a strain on Barcelona’s already tight finances year after year.
Several sources say that Lenglet’s pay and any other costs related to his stay at Barcelona during the 2024–25 season would cost the club around €19 million.
So, the sale of Lenglet will free up a lot of money on the salary bill, making it easier for Barcelona to sign new players for the next season.
