Eddie Howe explains the hidden reason why he substituted Anthony Gordon during Newcastle United vs Girona match (4-0)

Anthony Gordon should be ready to play for Newcastle United when the new season starts. He got back in shape during the off-season.

Gordon started on the left wing and scored as Newcastle beat Girona 4-0 at St. James’ Park in their second-to-last friendly before their first Premier League game next weekend against Southampton. Sean Longstaff scored twice, and Jacob Murphy also scored. Alexander Isak missed a chance against the La Liga team in the first half.

A few hits were thrown at Gordon in the first half, and he was taken off at halftime, which made people worry about his health.

However, head coach Eddie Howe said that the 23-year-old was fine and ready for the first game of the 2024–25 season.

When Gordon was brought on, Howe said, “That was the plan: play 45 minutes.” “Of course he looked good, but he’s behind the other girls.”

“After the Euros and a very long season, he needed a mental break.” But today was important. I loved seeing him score, and I thought he played great. This coming week, we’ll add more workouts to his schedule.

Gordon took a long break after playing for England at Euro 2024. He didn’t start training again until Tuesday, before the game. Kieran Trippier’s comeback was also pushed back, but he should be able to play in the second Sela Weekender game on Saturday against Stade Brestois (4 p.m. kick-off).

Howe said this about Friday night’s 4-0 win at St. James’ Park in front of 31,958 people: “Very good.” Really happy with how intense and full of energy our play was.

“The first thirty minutes were great in every way.” The heat was crazy in Japan today, so it was a good chance to be ourselves.

“The 11th will be very different tomorrow. Everyone who is healthy and didn’t play today will play tomorrow.”
