English football pundit Jamie Carragher gave the reason why Newcastle United FC should sign defender with John Terry qualities and skills
Newcastle United has already been informed of the specifics of the package they will receive in their pursuit of Chelsea defender Axel Disasi by former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.
The Magpies are reportedly interested in acquiring the French defender as a potential replacement for Marc Guehi this summer, according to a recent report from the Athletic. The Toon are currently in negotiations with Crystal Palace regarding the transfer of the England international, but they have not yet reached a mutually acceptable fee.
Newcastle is reportedly investigating potential alternatives, with 26-year-old Disasi now in their sights, as time is running out. It is not the first time the Toon have been associated with the former AS Monaco center-half, as United were interested in his services prior to his £38.5 million transfer to Stamford Bridge last summer.
Disasi scored three goals in 44 appearances across all competitions for the Blues last season. His most impressive performance was in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad. During the encounter, the French international made an impressive 15 clearances, prompting Carragher to draw comparisons to the legendary John Terry of Chelsea.
Immediately following the encounter, Carragher stated to Sky Sports, “I cannot recall a more impressive defensive performance this season, particularly from a central defender.” You are en route to Manchester City, where you will be pitted against the world’s greatest striker.
“He was exceptionally gifted.” I do not recall stating it on air, but he was the man of the match. He was undoubtedly the most exceptional performer on the field. He was simply hurling himself in front of [everything].
“Concerning central defenders and the evolution of the game since my time, that was the type of performance that you would expect from centre-backs 15 or 20 years ago.” Presently, it is accumulating from the rear, advancing and intervening.
“That was almost like a throwback, when it was just backs against the wall, throwing yourself in front of things.” Each time the ball enters the area, you are drawn to it like a magnet. Talking about Chelsea, that was an exceptional performance by John Terry, and I cannot offer any more praise than that.
Micah Richards, another Sky Sports pundit, concurred: “Yes, I believe that his positioning, some of the goals that Chelsea concede — he’s very strong, very fast, and aggressive — sometimes you’re looking at centre-backs with someone who has those qualities and you rely on that.”
“What I observed as positive about his performance today was that he was considering his position, location, and direction at the appropriate moments.” His overall performance was exceptional.
