VAR stopped Dango Ouattara from scoring a late goal for AFC Bournemouth, and Newcastle United came away with a draw on the South Coast.
The legendary Alan Shearer of Newcastle United has criticized VAR for ruling out AFC Bournemouth’s late goal against the Magpies.
Marcus Tavernier scored the first goal for the Cherries, giving them the lead at halftime. But Eddie Howe’s team came back after halftime and tied the game with a goal from Anthony Gordon at the back post.
It looked like Bournemouth had won when Dango Ouattara scored the game-winning goal by putting his head over the bar in extra time. However, the goal was called out by VAR, which caused a crazy end to the game.
At the end of the game, there were boos at Dean Court, and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola looked unhappy with the referees. At the end, when Shearer talked about his thoughts on X, he himself thought his team had gone free.
“A lucky point because that’s a bad call on handball,” he wrote. Don’t play handball with me.”
The Premier League Match Center wrote on social media to explain their choice: “Ouattara’s goal is awarded on the field.” The VAR changed the decision because they thought Ouattara had actually handballed the ball. This meant that there was no need for an on-field review, and the goal was ruled out.
Even more frustrating for Bournemouth was the fact that Joelinton only got a yellow card when he caught Neto trying to stop an escape. But the Premier League hasn’t said anything about that call yet.
Ultimately, Newcastle earned a point on the South Coast. The Magpies will play Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup this Wednesday, which is the first cup game of the season.
