Brendan Rodgers delivers his verdict over Celtic vs Rangers match (3-0)
Brendan Rodgers talked about what people don’t understand about what it’s like to play for both Celtic and Rangers the morning after Celtic beat Rangers badly.
The boss of Celtic is enjoying his second stint at the club. In his first season, he won the double, and so far in his second year, Rodgers has already set the tone with a dominant win over Rangers at Celtic Park.
Celtic are now comfortably ahead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. This morning on talkSPORT, Brendan Rodgers said that people who don’t live in Glasgow don’t really understand what it’s like to play for both of the Glasgow teams.
Some top players in the Premier League can’t handle playing for Celtic.
When asked about the win in the Glasgow Derby, McCoist said he was pleased with the core of the Celtic team. He also told Rodgers that his big players always step up for the Hoops manager in big games.
Rodgers told talkSPORT, “Yeah, that’s a fair assessment, and you’re right. I think people on the outside don’t understand how things are going up here with Celtic and Rangers.”
“Because a lot of players who have come up here from the Premier League have had a terrible time dealing with the pressure when they got to Celtic or Rangers.”
“After that, they go back to the Premier League, have a good career, and play well.” That’s how you handle the stress up here at both of these places.
“Kasper Schmeichel is still a world-class goalkeeper if you look at our team as a whole, as you say.” You have Cam Carter-Vickers, who does a great job of leading the defense.
“Callum MacGregor is a totally great captain.” A real humble person who plays well. And then, as you say, Kyogo goes through the middle. His speed and danger from behind are unmatched.
“Yeah, but what we did yesterday was really a group effort.”
How to think to play for Celtic
Many players from the south have joined Celtic and had a hard time (and sometimes gave up) when they put on the green and white Hoops. The Rangers fans have also set up their own club.
But many Celtic fans will remember how hard it was for Tony Cascarino when he came up from Aston Villa in 1992. The Irish player went to Chelsea and then Marseille, where he scored a lot of goals in France.
Harald Brattbakk is another Norwegian scorer who came as a free-scoring option. He was scoring in the Champions League before making the big move to Celtic, but he had a hard time in Paradise. He did, however, score one of Celtic’s most important goals ever in 1997.
Another player who didn’t make it at Celtic was Teemu Pukki. He was one of the best scorers in Denmark with Brondby, the English Championship with Norwich City, and is now making a name for himself in the MLS with Minnesota United.
That’s just one of many like it. The most recent great example of this is Mikey Johnston. There are many talented players in the world, but if they can’t handle pressure, they will have a hard time at a club like Celtic or Rangers.
