When asked about Alan Shearer’s words about Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford last week, Erik ten Hag said they were “stupid.”

In a Manchester United press meeting last week, Alan Shearer said he “understands” why Erik ten Hag defended Marcus Rashford. However, ten Hag has said he stands by what he said.

Ten Hag said on Friday that Shearer’s analysis of Rashford on Match of the Day was “stupid,” and he claimed that he was pleased with how he played against Brighton.

Rashford did not do well at the Amex Stadium, as Shearer said, “Ruud van Nistelrooy has been brought in and he’s going to have to work his magic somehow.”

“At least he’s trying to make runs,” host Gary Lineker said of Rashford. “Yeah, but he’s not a kid anymore,” Shearer snapped back. He needs to know his place on the field and take a good look across it. If he can see the whole thing, he shouldn’t be offside.

When asked about those comments at his press conference before Liverpool, Ten Hag called Shearer’s analysis “stupid.” Shearer has now replied to Ten Hag on his own.

Shearer told Betfair that he still feels the way he does about Rashford and that the 26-year-old might need to leave United to get his career going again.

In the interview, Shearer said, “I was pretty happy with what I said about Manchester United and Marcus Rashford before the game.” The question was asked of Erik ten Hag in his press meeting about one of his players, so I completely understand how he felt.

“He has no choice but to keep his player safe.” That made perfect sense to me. I would stand by everything I said, though, because what I saw over the weekend didn’t change my mind.

“Man United’s three league games so far haven’t shown much difference from what we saw last year, when they finished eighth.” So I stand by what I said. They’re still wide open and having trouble in forward spots. Marcus Rashford isn’t playing well enough right now to bring back his England future.

“I have no idea what his training philosophy is or how he thinks about things, but there’s only one way back: train hard and have the right mindset.”

For some reason, he’s become very rigid in his career, and it hasn’t worked for him for a while now. From the outside, I think he should have left Man United to start over.” Marcus is the only one who can say how badly he wants to score 30 goals again this year.

Rashford lost confidence last season and scored just eight goals across all tournaments. Because of this, he did not make the England team for the European Championship.

Ten Hag took action against Rashford’s bad behavior off the field at the start of 2024, and his friendship with United fans was put to the test.

United fans were upset that Alejandro Garnacho was replaced while Marcus Rashford stayed on the field against Liverpool.
