Reason explained why 53-year-old former Manchester United captain Roy Keane will be absent for the Man United Legends match vs. Celtic charity match
While playing, Roy Keane was captain of Manchester United and also played for Celtic. He will not be playing in this afternoon’s charity game at Old Trafford, though.
Football legend Roy Keane has already talked about why he doesn’t play in charity games anymore, even though two of his old teams are playing at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Keane had a legendary career as a player. He played 475 games for Liverpool before moving to Celtic, where he retired after only 11 games for the Glasgow team. Because of how famous he is in football, the 53-year-old should be one of the first players asked to play in this weekend’s Manchester United Foundation match.
That being said, the former player will not be playing because he admitted a few years ago that he is not fit enough to return to the field. When he talked to Off the Ball, he said, “I’m not fit.” I’m not at all fit.
“It’s actually very, very embarrassing how fit I am.” I’m not fit just because I haven’t gained a lot of weight.
“I couldn’t really run.” In other words, I’ve been asked to play legends games or whatever you want to call them a few times in the last few years.
“It would be really hard for me because I wouldn’t be able to move around.” Too many problems with injuries.
“I try to have a decent diet obviously and I’m wary of putting on too much weight, but I certainly wouldn’t be fit enough to go on any sort of run.” Just one month after this interview, Keane showed up out of the blue for United in a charity game against Liverpool at Anfield. The home fans gave him the best welcome ever.
But this was only one time, and he hasn’t worn the United shirt since. Keane is also not in the country today because he is a commentator for ITV Sport’s coverage of England.
The Three Lions play Keane’s Republic of Ireland in the Nations League on Saturday night. The well-known Red will be on their panel reporting the game.
