This is the first time this season that Marcus Rashford has been on the bench. He has scored three goals in his last two games.
Marcus Rashford, a forward for Manchester United, has been taken off the field by boss Erik ten Hag and will not play against Crystal Palace.
In his last two games, Rashford scored three goals. He had started all six of United’s games this season, but he was surprisingly put in as a replacement at Selhurst Park.
The only change from last week’s 3-0 win at Southampton is that Alejandro Garnacho has been put in place of Rashford. This season, Garnacho has played twice, but he also scored two goals and set up two others when he came off the bench against Manchester City, Fulham, and Southampton. He also missed a goal in the loss at Brighton because Joshua Zirkzee was offside.
Ten Hag said Garnacho has been great as a game-changer off the bench, but he also said Garnacho should start games.
The first time this season, Rasmus Hojlund is back with the team after missing eight weeks with a hamstring strain. Also, Mason Mount is back after missing four weeks with a hamstring injury.
Ten Hag talked at length before the game about Rashford’s recent improvement in form. “I think every player who plays in the Premier League, but definitely in this club, you need some resilience,” he said. “There is no such thing as an up and down in football. You always go down.” You need to handle it.
“Marcus Rashford has also been through it, so he knows how to bounce back and set goals for his job and performance. He took charge, and I believe he is now on his way back. He got off to a great start to the season. Now he needs to keep going and get better.
Ten Hag said that Rashford probably needed some help, like having someone back him up, when asked if new assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy had helped him in any way.
“He has to do it by himself in the end.” He needs to fix his life, the way he trains, and the way he plays in the match. He is a class player, so when he sets his professionalism, he will do well.
“I think he always knew, and every player knows that if your lifestyle isn’t right, you can’t play in the leagues we play in.” If you don’t have a good, controlled life away from Carrington, you won’t get to the right levels.
