Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola issued a four-word message over Dan Burn’s harsh tackle with Erling Haaland, leaving an injury scare after their draw match against Newcastle United
Pep Guardiola said that Manchester City “suffered a lot” against Newcastle United on a Sunday afternoon. Erling Haaland never forgot his trip to St. James’ Park.
Dan Burn did a great job keeping Haaland in check during Saturday’s 1-1 draw. It was the first time since May that Haaland failed to score in the Premier League. Of all the players who played, only Rico Lewis of Manchester City had fewer touches than the Norway star.
At one point in the first half, Haaland did knock Burn to the ground as they fought for the ball by the sideline. But the Newcastle back left his mark on the mess when he caught the Manchester City star on the achilles and tore his sock. On Match of the Day, Guardiola praised Burn for being “so strong.” When asked about the hits Haaland took and the wound, Guardiola smiled and said, “That’s the Premier League.”
Instead, Guardiola went out of his way to praise Newcastle. At the end of the game, he told Eddie Howe that he “admired him for the way he brought himself to the game.”
“You know St James’ Park is always a tough place,” he said. “The long balls in behind got them off to a great start.” Joshua Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Joelinton are fast, and after they block so deep, they score. You can see that Joelinton can play forward. After they got the goal, they had their moments. We had a hard time for 10 minutes because of the crowd and everything. We know how happy everyone was when the point was made.
