“A lot went wrong” — Charlton Athletic manager slams officiating following Portsmouth FC defeat

Portsmouth FC boost survival hopes as Nathan Jones blasts referee after Charlton Athletic defeat

Pompey reignited their fight for Championship survival with a commanding 3-1 victory over relegation rivals Charlton Athletic — but the post-match headlines were dominated by Addicks boss Nathan Jones’ furious assessment of the officiating.

John Mousinho’s side delivered an emphatic display on the road, with Colby Bishop converting from the penalty spot and Terry Devlin unleashing two stunning long-range strikes — one in each half — to seal a crucial three points.

However, Jones turned his frustration toward referee Leigh Doughty, claiming the official “got a hell of a lot wrong” during a fiery contest at The Valley. Charlton were shown seven yellow cards on the night, five of which came before the interval, and Jones was particularly incensed by the first-half penalty decision that allowed Pompey to take control.

Speaking after the match, the former Southampton FC boss suggested the officiating shaped the tone of the encounter. He felt nearly every first-half challenge resulted in a booking and questioned several key calls, including late incidents he believed could have gone against Pompey.

Despite his anger, Jones conceded the result itself was deserved. He admitted his side were physically “dominated” — a rarity under his tenure — and criticised their failure to win key battles across the pitch.

While insisting Charlton carved out strong chances that could have altered the game’s trajectory, Jones labelled the overall performance “inept,” describing it as one of their worst displays at a critical stage of the season.

For Pompey, though, it was a night of resilience and quality — a statement win that could prove pivotal in their battle to beat the drop.
