“A new era is born tonight” After a remarkable comeback, Nicușor Dan, the candidate for Romania’s presidency who is pro-Western, was victorious
As Romanians voted in a vital and polarised presidential election runoff on Sunday, both nationalist George Simion and centrist Nicușor Dan faced off against each other. The stakes have never been this high in Romania’s post-communist history.
The Romanian presidential election rerun thriller, which captivated and polarised the country on Sunday, was won by Nicușor Dan, an independent candidate seeking the presidency.
A disparity of around 900,000 votes, which, with only half a million ballots to count, has proven impossible to overcome, was maintained by Dan after 97% of the votes were counted. This gave him a 54% edge over his nationalist challenger George Simion, who received 45% of the support of voters.
Following the high-stakes re-run of the presidential election that was cancelled in December 2024, the late-night cliffhanger occurred after 11 million Romanians cast their ballots, with a turnout rate of 64%.
While Simion lingered around 45% of the vote, Dan was anticipated to have won approximately 54% of the vote on Sunday, according to domestic exit polls that were published by Euronews Romania earlier on Sunday. These polls proved out to be accurate predictions.
According to the current state of affairs, the nation that is located on the eastern frontier of NATO voted for the candidate who is pro-EU and pro-NATO. The election was distinguished by a high turnout that was marked by fear and resentment, and it overturned Simion’s lead in the first round.
Everyone is a proud winner.
As they waited for the official count to be completed, both candidates announced their victory earlier on Sunday.
Following the announcement of the results of the polls, Dan stated, “Today’s victory is the result of a Romanian community that desires a significant change.” “We are living a moment of hope.”
The reconstruction of Romania should begin tomorrow, and we should all work together to get it started. “Republic of Romania is going to go through a difficult time; let us not forget the power that our nation possesses,” Dan continued.
“It is our duty to fight for a single Romania, not for two Romanias,” he said at the conclusion.
Euronews Romania’s live broadcast has shown hundreds of Dan fans celebrating in front of Bucharest’s town hall, where the independent candidate was voted mayor twice. The demonstration took place on the major boulevard.
While this was going on, Simion made the announcement that he was “Romania’s new president” inside of the Romanian parliament in Bucharest, where his party was holding a rally.
Now is the beginning of a brand new era. The time has come for a period in which Romania will emerge as a prosperous, democratic, and Christian nation. Therefore, have mercy on us, God,” Simion declared.
Clearly, we are the ones who emerged victorious from these elections. As representatives of the Romanian people, we assert that we have won this battle. “This is the triumph of the Romanian people, who have been humiliated,” he continued.
We are now required to shake hands because this is a democratic process, and it does not matter which side any of us has been on throughout these elections.
During the last days of the presidential campaign earlier this week, Simion made extensive visits to members of the Romanian diaspora, and he expressed his gratitude to them.
The Romanian diaspora is responsible for the success that I achieved today. You Romanians who have left the country, you must be aware that it is only with your influence that we will be able to elevate Romania to a position of prominence among the nations of the free world.
“I don’t promise miracles, but I promise to be among you,” he came to the conclusion.
Simion then exited the stage to the tune of “YMCA” by Village People, which is one of the songs that President Donald Trump of the United States of America enjoys listening to when he is campaigning for the 2024 election.
There was another instance of a fake news effort.
Voters were warned about a false news campaign that was being carried out on Telegram, TikTok, and other social media platforms during the final hours of the voting process. Romania’s foreign, interior, and defence ministries condemned what they referred to as “Russian interference.”
“Once again, we see the distinctive signs of Russian interference (…) to influence the electoral process,” Andrei Tarnea, the spokesperson for the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on X Sunday.
It was to be anticipated, he continued.
A bogus film that was broadcast on Sunday “falsely claims that French troops in Romania secretly wear Romanian gendarmerie uniforms to intervene internally,” according to the three ministries, who in a synchronised effort announced that the video has been traced directly to Russia.
