Newcastle United are set to resume their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Manchester City this Saturday evening. The Magpies are eager to recover from back-to-back league defeats as they welcome a City side in strong form to St
James’ Park, with kickoff scheduled for 5:30 pm. Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table and just two points above the relegation zone, Newcastle have accumulated 12 points from their first 11 league games.
Eddie Howe’s team comes into the match following losses at West Ham and Brentford, though they have maintained a strong home record with five consecutive wins at St James’ Park across all competitions. Howe, however, has yet to secure a Premier League victory over Manchester City, with his sole triumph against Pep Guardiola’s squad being a 1-0 Carabao Cup win at home in 2023.

Defender Dan Burn will miss the game due to suspension. The 33-year-old was sent off in Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford after conceding a penalty while already on a yellow card, resulting in a one-match ban according to Premier League rules for two bookable offenses. Had he received a straight red, he would have faced a three-match suspension. Burn’s domestic ban does not affect European fixtures, so he would have been eligible for the Champions League match against Marseille. He is set to return for Newcastle’s next league game against Everton.
Howe may be boosted by the potential return of winger Anthony Gordon, who has been recovering from a hip injury. Gordon trained in the buildup to the match after missing the Brentford game and the international break with England. Sandro Tonali and Nick Pope have also been cleared to play. Pope returned to full fitness after passing the 12-day concussion protocol following his injury against Brentford, while Tonali has no significant issues after being rested in Italy’s 4-1 World Cup qualifier loss to Norway.
Tino Livramento remains doubtful due to a long-term knee injury, and Yoane Wissa will again miss out with a knee problem. Burn had been deputizing at left-back in Livramento’s absence, with Lewis Hall’s minutes carefully managed after his own lengthy layoff. Howe will need to adjust his defensive options for this weekend’s match against one of the league’s strongest sides. Hall could earn his first Premier League start at St James’ Park since February after impressive substitute performances and two appearances for England Under-21s during the international break.
Burn is also approaching a yellow card suspension, as any player receiving five bookings in the first 19 matches of the season is handed a one-match ban. Currently, he has three bookings, leaving him two away from triggering an additional suspension.
