Authorities have reported that at least 25 individuals were injured in an incident that occurred on Friday at a petrol and LPG station in the Centocelle neighborhood of Rome’s southeast. The disaster, which transpired at approximately 8:20 a.m., was the result of a technical malfunction during the refueling process, according to the Rome fire brigade’s preliminary information.

 

 

 

 

Authorities declared that none of the injured are in a critical condition. According to reports, five individuals were hospitalized with minor burns and injuries resulting from shattered glass from the detonation. The plume of smoke was visible throughout the city, and the explosion was audible in other regions of the Italian capital.

 

 

 

 

The explosion was so violent that some individuals residing in the apartments near the petrol station were also injured, according to the Agi news agency. Initially, a total of 10 individuals were reported as injured, including eight police officers, a firefighter, and an emergency operator.

 

 

 

 

later stated that the number had increased to approximately 20 before the official toll was revised to 25. Elisabetta Accardo, a spokesperson for the Roman police, informed Italian state broadcaster RAI that there were several chain explosions following the initial incident. “All of the police officers who were injured sustained burns; however, they are not at risk of losing their lives.

 

 

 

 

” Several of the surrounding structures and vehicles were damaged by the shock wave, resulting in their subsequent fires. The flames rapidly disseminated to a law enforcement facility situated behind the petrol station. The area was cordoned off to facilitate safety operations, and firefighters are still working to extinguish the conflagration in challenging conditions.

 

 

 

 

Rome has been experiencing an intense heatwave for weeks. In an interview with local media, residents reported that the explosion was so violent and loud that it struck adjacent buildings “like an earthquake.” In order to initiate an investigation file, the Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office is anticipating the arrival of the initial reports from the fire brigade and the police.
