Aidan Hutchinson, a member of the Detroit Lions, has been identified as the leading contender for the esteemed NFL award in 2025. Aidan Hutchinson’s 2024 season was prematurely terminated by a season-ending leg injury sustained in Week 6.
The Detroit Lions pass rusher was on the brink of a historic season and had the potential to win the AP Defensive Player of the Year award prior to his injury. In five games last year, Hutchinson recorded 7.5 sacks and 45 quarterback pressures.
Despite the fact that Hutchinson was unsuccessful in his pursuit of the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2024, as Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II was awarded the title, Brent Sobleski of Bleacher Report has identified Hutchinson as a leading contender for the prestigious award in 2025.
“Hutchinson may be able to claim some personal hardware if he remains fully healthy for the entirety of the 2025 season.” In his fourth season, Patrick Surtain II was awarded the Defensive Player of the Year award. Sobleski wrote, “It is a coincidence that Hutchinson is now entering his fourth year after being the second overall draft pick in 2022.
“Hutchinson is one of the most influential edge rushers in football when he is in good health. The Michigan product recorded 101 quarterback pressures and 11.5 sacks during his final season of complete health in 2023. Hutchinson, 24, is poised to achieve a career year and secure his first DPOY in 2025 if he maintains his heath throughout the entire 17-game schedule.
Detroit’s superstar pass rusher will be required to perform at an exceptional level, as the remainder of the edge rusher room is unremarkable. Furthermore, Hutchinson is eligible for a contract extension. The 2022 No.2 overall decision will have an additional incentive to produce a dominant 2025 campaign if the Lions opt to delay the extension of his contract by one year.
