Alan Brazil lifts lid on transfer clash as O’Neill fumes at Celtic board

Alan Brazil has claimed that Martin O’Neill is deeply frustrated with the Celtic board, suggesting tensions over transfer dealings are at the centre of the dispute.

Celtic’s January transfer window drew heavy criticism from supporters after the club failed to spend any transfer fee on strengthening the first team. Instead, three loan signings were brought in — a strategy that reportedly did not sit well with O’Neill.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Brazil said there is unrest behind the scenes at Parkhead.

“There is a big row at Celtic at the minute,” Brazil stated. “The club doesn’t spend crazy money. Celtic often take the view that they have enough to get by and win trophies, but the fans want more.

“I’m told Martin is raging about the transfers. They brought three players in on loan and I don’t think that’s what he wanted. From what I hear, he was hoping to sign permanent additions, and that decision could end up costing them.”

O’Neill’s future under fresh scrutiny

This is not the first time questions have surfaced about O’Neill’s satisfaction at Celtic in recent days.

Brazil’s talkSPORT colleague Jim White recently dismissed speculation suggesting the manager was considering walking away from the club due to frustration over transfer policy. However, the continued circulation of such rumours does little to ease pressure on the hierarchy.

If O’Neill were to leave amid claims of discontent over recruitment, it would intensify scrutiny on a board already facing criticism from sections of the support.

O’Neill’s standing at Celtic

Regardless of how this season concludes, O’Neill’s legacy at Celtic remains secure. He is widely regarded as a club legend, and that status is unlikely to change.

Should the campaign end without silverware and O’Neill depart, many supporters would likely direct their frustration towards the club’s executives rather than the manager.

However, if O’Neill continues to argue that financial limitations are preventing Celtic from competing effectively in Europe, that narrative could shape how fans assess both his leadership and the season overall — regardless of trophies.
