Amanda Staveley and Alexander Isak are no strangers to high-profile exits from Newcastle United.
The summer-long transfer saga involving Newcastle, Liverpool, and Isak finally concluded on deadline day with a £130 million Premier League record deal. Since joining from Real Sociedad in 2022 for £63 million, the Swedish striker scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, making him Newcastle’s record signing at the time. His arrival came less than a year after the club was taken over by a consortium including Amanda Staveley, RB Sports & Media, and the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF).
During his time at Newcastle, Isak was instrumental in helping the Magpies qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons under PIF ownership. He also scored the winning goal in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool in March. However, the striker eventually pushed for a move to Liverpool, refusing to train or play with his Newcastle teammates in the final months of his stint before completing the transfer to Anfield.
Isak opens up on challenges at Liverpool
Since arriving at Liverpool, things haven’t gone exactly as planned. The forward is yet to score a Premier League or Champions League goal for the club. His only goal in eight appearances came in a Carabao Cup victory against Southampton, a competition Liverpool have since exited, having previously reached the final in 2024 and 2025.
Reflecting on his struggles, Isak told Sportbladet:
“It was about half an hour. It felt okay. I feel like the reaction was good after the match in my body. Hopefully I can play properly in the next match [v Slovenia]. It’s always frustrating when you’re injured. Regardless of whether it’s one match or more. It’s always worse for the player himself. But when I’m on the field, I don’t give myself any excuses. I always want to play my game and perform.”
