Ancelotti, the former manager of Real Madrid, has been sentenced to prison in Spain for tax evasion. Carlo Ancelotti, the former manager of Real Madrid in 2014, was sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term by a Spanish court for tax evasion.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, the Madrid court also imposed a sanction of 386,000 euros ($452,187) on Ancelotti. In 2014 and 2015, Spanish prosecutors accused Ancelotti of defrauding the state of 1 million euros ($1m).

For two counts of tax deception, state prosecutors requested a prison sentence of up to four years and nine months. However, the former manager of Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain, who no longer resides in Spain, will not be sentenced to prison time due to the fact that the sentence is less than two years and he has no criminal record.

In Spain, a magistrate has the authority to suspend a sentence of less than two years for first-time offenders. Ancelotti was accused by prosecutors in March 2024 of employing sham companies to conceal his actual earnings. For instance, they alleged that Ancelotti participated in an alleged scheme by employing a company in the Virgin Islands that lacked “any real [economic] activity.”

“The coach will not make comments for now,” stated Carlos Sanchez, Ancelotti’s press officer, in an interview with The Associated Press. The case was being monitored by Brazil’s football confederation (CBF), according to a statement. The Italian coach is the most recent in a series of prominent football figures to be subjected to an investigation by Spanish authorities due to unpaid taxes,

although no one has been jailed thus far. Jose Mourinho, another former Madrid coach, is included in that list, as are star players Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. A request for comment was not promptly addressed by the CBF. Ancelotti, who celebrated his 66th birthday last month, is considered one of the most successful coaches in the history of football.

He is the sole coach to have won the Champions League five times, three times with Madrid and twice with AC Milan. Additionally, he is the only coach to have won domestic league titles in England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France. After a rare trophy-less campaign in the 2024-25 season, the former Italy midfielder departed Real Madrid to become the manager of Brazil at the conclusion of the previous season.
