Ange Postecoglou’s reported stance on a Celtic return has come to light following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation just nine games into the new season. Rodgers’ second stint in charge, which began in June 2023, came to an abrupt end after a crushing 3-1 defeat to Hearts left Celtic eight points behind the Premiership leaders — a gap too wide for the Northern Irishman to recover from.
So, could Postecoglou make a sensational comeback to Glasgow?
According to The Scottish Sun, the Australian coach has ruled himself out of the running for the Celtic job. The 60-year-old is reportedly taking a break from football entirely, choosing to recharge and reflect after a turbulent period at the City Ground. Sources say Postecoglou wants to step away from the spotlight and carefully assess his next move instead of diving straight into another high-pressure role.
Despite that, Postecoglou remains a beloved figure among Celtic supporters. During his 2021–2023 spell, his exciting “Angeball” philosophy brought two Premiership titles, two League Cups, and a Scottish Cup to Parkhead. However, his recent managerial challenges have clouded his future prospects. After being dismissed by Tottenham Hotspur in May — despite leading them to Europa League success — he made a surprise return to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest. Unfortunately, that stint lasted just 39 days, ending with no wins in eight games and his eventual sacking.
In the meantime, Celtic have turned to a familiar face. Club legend Martin O’Neill has been appointed interim manager, marking a nostalgic return for the 73-year-old who guided the Bhoys to seven major honours, including three league titles, in the early 2000s. Former midfielder Shaun Maloney has also joined the caretaker setup to help steady the team while the club’s board plans its long-term future.
As reported by The Telegraph, Celtic’s managerial shortlist features three main candidates — Ange Postecoglou, Robbie Keane, and Kieran McKenna. With Postecoglou seemingly out of the picture, the race now appears to be between Keane and McKenna.
Robbie Keane, now 45, has been building an impressive managerial résumé, having led Maccabi Tel Aviv to success in Israel before winning the Hungarian league title with Ferencvaros. His tactical nous and strong leadership have made him a serious contender.
Meanwhile, 39-year-old Kieran McKenna has risen rapidly through the managerial ranks. Since taking over Ipswich Town in 2021, he’s masterminded back-to-back promotions, taking them from League One to the Premier League. Though Ipswich suffered relegation this season, the club’s hierarchy are refusing to part ways easily — they reportedly want over £5 million in compensation for McKenna, who remains under contract until 2028.
Former Celtic striker and pundit Chris Sutton has added his voice to the debate, telling BBC Radio 5 Live that supporters would love to see Postecoglou back at Parkhead — even if the timing isn’t right just yet.
“It could happen,” Sutton said. “Would I like to see him back? Yeah, eventually — why not? I really enjoyed Angeball. He’s respected at Celtic for what he achieved, and it was brilliant football.”
He later posted on X:
“So in the end it was all Brendan’s fault… good luck to Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney in the short term… bring back Big Ange 🍀.”
