Arne Engels will have the opportunity to confront the club that spurned him tonight when the Celtic team plays Club Brugge in the Champions League at Celtic Park.

This is a rare occurrence for a Celtic player.Engels’ journey to Glasgow has been anything but straightforward, and his return to Brugge is expected to be a profoundly personal and emotional evening for the Belgian.

Engels was initially identified by Gent; however, it was not until he was twelve years old that he transferred to Club Brugge, where he began to exhibit his potential.

He consistently advanced through the youth ranks of Brugge, establishing a reputation for himself over the years.

He had secured a position in the UEFA Youth League by the age of 16, and he appearedo as a substitute for Brugge’s U19s during the 2019/20 season. His exceptional performances earned him a spot on the senior team’s bench for their UEFA Europa League play-off against Dynamo Kyiv.

However, despite his potential, he was never given the chance to appear for Brugge’s first team.

Engels’ début for the Belgian national team occurred in September 2024, during a Nations League match against Israel.

Engels will face off against his former employers at Celtic Park tonight, and it is evident that this match holds a greater significance for him than merely another Champions League match.

Engels disclosed the emotional significance of the event during an interview with Voetbalkrant. He stated, “I have designated Wednesday, November 27, as a date in my calendar for the past two months.”

I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to face off against Club Brugge. When the Champions League draw was conducted, I was en route to signing with Celtic FC. I was travelling to the airport with my agent, and we were following that draw.

“I recall expressing my desire to witness Celtic and Club Brugge emerge from that drum.” Suddenly, both teams were connected, and I began to yell and strike my agent in the taxi. The motorist was unaware of the situation.

Engels will be eager to demonstrate to Brugge the value they overlooked when they declined to include him in their first team, as it is evident that this match holds a special place in his heart.

Celtic supporters will undoubtedly be anxious to witness Engels take to the pitch and demonstrate the reasons why Brendan Rodgers was so adamant about securing his signature for a club-record fee.

The Belgian has the opportunity to solidify his position in Celtic’s midfield, as Paulo Bernardo is close behind him. This could be a significant moment.
