Arsenal legend Ian Wright brutally slams the 23-year-old forward Gabriel Martinelli’ with a strong verdict on his perfomance during Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Wolves
Ian Wright, a former player for Arsenal, was unhappy with Gabriel Martinelli’s choices during their 2-0 win over Wolves in their Premier League opener.
Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka scored goals to earn a solid win, but Wright was critical of a play in which Martinelli chose to shoot from a close range instead of passing to Declan Rice, who was free in the box.
Wright said Martinelli made his choice because he was “desperate to do well” after a bad season last year and because Leandro Trossard is competing with him. Wright said Martinelli may have missed a better chance to put Arsenal ahead two goals before break because he was trying too hard to impress.
Wright said this about Premier League Productions: “This one is a little disappointing for me because he [Martinelli] has the chance to cut back to Declan Rice…” Because Trossard is on the bench, I know he really wants to do well. Martinelli, he had a bad season last year.
“But he’s trying to make a point with the manager. But give that back to Declan Rice, 2-0, and you’ll probably score in the second half.”
Even though his team was criticized, Mikel Arteta was happy with how they played overall, pointing out that they were able to get a win and keep a clean sheet. He said that the first game was tough, but he was proud of his team’s ability to adjust and win, which he called a “job well done.”
Looking ahead, Arsenal will play Aston Villa next Saturday. Villa came fourth last year and beat West Ham to start the season. Arteta said again that the team’s chances of winning the title would depend on how well they played and what happened during the season.
