Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta explains his reason why he refused the club from signing Ivan Toney this summer that most fans might get angry about
Arsenal allegedly turned down the chance to sign Ivan Toney because Mikel Arteta was worried about the player after meeting with him.
It is said that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta turned down the chance to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney because he was worried about how the player might affect the team’s unity. Even though the team is still trying to catch Manchester City for the Premier League title, Arteta opted to keep the players he already had instead of getting a new one during the summer transfer window.
Because Arsenal almost won the title for the second year in a row, there were rumors that the Gunners would try to sign a classic striker. Kai Havertz played better near the end of the season, but he was mostly used in the middle of the field. Gabriel Jesus, on the other hand, had a hard time staying healthy and only scored four Premier League goals.
Toney, who was about to finish his last year of deal with Brentford, became a possible target. But as the transfer window went on, it became clear that Arsenal had changed their minds and would not be looking for a new striker. Instead, they chose to spend their money on other players.
The Independent says that Arteta chose not to sign Toney because he thought the striker’s personality might not fit with the team’s overall philosophy.
Arteta’s work to make Arsenal more team-oriented has been a big part of the club’s comeback, and he wasn’t sure that Toney would fit in with the rest of the players.
This feeling is similar to what Arsenal insider Teamnewsandtix said earlier, when they said that the club’s leaders were not pleased with Toney during the first talks. In June, writer Charles Watts talked about how Arsenal officials “didn’t like” the forward after meeting him, saying they were worried about his personality and attitude.
Toney wanted to join one of the top six Premier League teams, including Arsenal. On the last day of the transfer window, he finally got a deal to join Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. The English player is set to make £403,000 a week, which in the UK would be £800,000 before taxes.
