As a result of the Old Firm away supporter lockout, Kris Boyd thinks that Rangers faced more significant consequences than Celtic

Kris Boyd says the lockout of away Celtic and Rangers fans hurt Rangers more than it hurt Celtic.

The SPFL has put in place a 5% away allocation starting in 2024/25. This is because last season there were Glasgow derbies without any visiting fans. This means that between 2,500 and 3,000 Celtic fans will be able to enter Ibrox, and the same amount of Gers fans will be able to enter Parkhead.

In 2018, Rangers cut Celtic’s allotment of tickets from 7,000 to about 750. Their rivals quickly reacted. There have been no briefs released since then because both clubs have been tit-for-tat. But Boyd says that Gers were hit the hardest because their fans were mad at them last season because they couldn’t win any home games against Celtic.

“It’s important for Scottish football,” the former Light Blues scorer told Sky Sports. It’s awful when you get to our biggest game and there are no away fans there. To be honest, I think it’s hurt Rangers more than it helped Celtic. You think back to the first game last year at Ibrox.

“The crowd was really excited, and then Celtic scored. The Rangers fans got very angry, and they threw objects on the field.” There was nowhere else for them to go with it, so if there are fans in there, they can joke around with each other, as long as it’s nice!”

Chris Sutton, on the other hand, is glad that the ongoing problems have been solved because he thinks it will make Scottish football look better.

“It’s very important,” he said. It’s been too long now. This is one of the most important football games in the world. It was bigger of a shame for Scottish football that away fans couldn’t get in, since the game is better for them.

“I still remember my first Celtic vs. Rangers game, the demolition derby, where we beat Rangers 6-2. As I walked out of the tunnel, I could hear both sets of fans.” I think it was the best place to play I’ve ever been. It’s great to see, and the game is better for fans from other teams who are there.
