Decisions must be made regarding five individuals from Pep Guardiola’s midfield wishlist.

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City will be focusing on the reconstruction of a squad that has reached its limit during the subsequent two transfer windows.

City have been the most successful club in England for the past few years; however, this season seems to mark the conclusion of an era by the club.

They are currently sixth in the standings, 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool, and have only won nine of their 19 Premier League games thus far.

Rodri’s injury has been a significant factor in City’s struggles; however, the ageing and ailing players in his absence necessitate decisions to be made in January and the summer.

A few players will be out of contract at the conclusion of the current season, while others are no longer favorable due to their age.Kevin de Bruyne, who has been a key factor in City’s success, is confronted with an ambiguous future at the Etihad.

The Belgian international, who is out of contract in the summer, disclosed to The Independent over the weekend that negotiations regarding a new contract have not yet resumed.

Ilkay Gundogan initially departed City for Barcelona in 2023; however, he remained in La Liga for one season before becoming a free agent once more.

In the summer, he inked a one-year contract with City and will be released at the conclusion of the current campaign.

In the summer, Bernardo Silva, who is thirty years old, will have one year remaining on his current contract. Barcelona was a potential destination for the Portuguese international during the previous transfer window; however, no agreement was reached.

Silva has the potential to secure a new contract; however, he has encountered difficulty in maintaining his current level of performance this season.

He only inked a short-term extension in 2023, so if City wishes to prevent the loss of nearly their entire midfield in a single event, that could be the course of action. Alternatively, he could see out his contract and depart as a free agent in 2026.

Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes are less urgent concerns than others due to the duration of their current contracts; however, they have been a part of City’s struggling midfield this season.

Kovacic will also reach the age of 31 at the conclusion of the campaign, while Nunes is the youngest member of the group. Guardiola appears to have already identified his preferred players in terms of potential reinforcements.

A recent report from The Times indicates that Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes are potential targets. However, both players are expected to command a substantial price tag and are unlikely to be sold in January.

Joshua Kimmich, Ederson of Atalanta, and Morten Hjulmand of Sporting CP have been tentatively associated, but there have been no concrete allegations to date. In January, however, each would be a valuable addition.
