The latest news about Newcastle United is that Eddie Howe’s team will play Barcelona at St. James’ Park to start their Champions League season.
Newcastle United’s first Champions League game of the 2025–26 season is Thursday night at home against Barcelona. The current champions of Spain have played the Magpies four times in this league, so they are used to them.
Because they’ve won three and lost one, Barcelona has the upper hand in these matches. Remember, though, that one loss was at St. James’ Park, where Newcastle United beat them 3-2 thanks to a great performance from Tino Asprilla.
Robert Lewandowski, a striker who used to play for Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, is one of them. Lewandowski turned 37 years old last month, but he is still one of the best players in the world and has been for more than a decade.
Last season, the Polish player scored 42 goals for Barcelona across all tournaments. He scored 11 goals in 13 games as Barcelona made it to the semifinals of the Champions League.
Robert Lewandowski’s shocking statement to Newcastle United
During a recent interview with the Times, Lewandowski talked about having a Newcastle United shirt as a child that had a striker’s name and number on the back: “When I was growing up, I remember I had the jersey of Newcastle, with Shearer No9 on the back.”
the top. That’s right, I also planned the party; it was fun.
On Thursday night, Newcastle United will want to stop Lewandowski from pulling out that celebration. Dan Burn and Fabian Schar will probably be in charge of that. This season, Burn and Schar, along with Tino Livramento, Kieran Trippier, and Nick Pope, have made up a very strong back five that has kept three clean sheets in four games.
Lewandowski will be hard to stop, though. It will be one of their hardest jobs so far.
There are also Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman that Howe can use. Both players have played in the Champions League before, but only one of those games was with the black-and-whites.
If Lewandowski gets past the Magpies’ defenders and scores on Thursday, it won’t be in front of Alan Shearer. That’s because Newcastle United’s all-time top scorer said he won’t be at St. James’ Park on Thursday night because he has a Premier League event planned in the US: “Can you believe it? Shearer told the Rest is Football Podcast, “This has been planned for such a long time. It’s like the Premier League’s fan fest in the US.”
“My flight to Kansas is on Thursday.” Do you really believe that? I’m not going to see the game.
“That’s crazy.” Unfortunately, a nightmare for me.”
