Barry Ferguson offers his view on the Scottish title race as speculation mounts about Steven Gerrard rejoining Rangers.

Celtic’s trophy-winning manager Brendan Rodgers has once again outlasted another Rangers boss.

After seeing off Philippe Clement last season — followed by Barry Ferguson’s short interim spell, which didn’t lead to a permanent appointment — Rodgers has now witnessed the exit of Russell Martin as well. Reports suggest Rangers are now considering bringing Steven Gerrard back to the dugout. Despite fresh optimism surrounding the club’s summer tie-up with the 49ers, the season has quickly turned sour, with symbolic gestures like swimming in Loch Lomond doing little to change their fortunes.

Even amid Rangers’ poor form, a hopeful Barry Ferguson still believes his former club can mount a title challenge. Speaking to the Daily Record, he said:

“It’s still early in the season — 31 league games left, that’s 93 points still to play for.”

At present, Rangers sit eighth in the Premiership, nine points adrift of Celtic and 11 behind surprise leaders Hearts.

Yet Ferguson remains positive:

“There’s still a lot of football to play. It’s not over yet. They’re still in four competitions.”

When asked whether Rangers could still win the league if they make the right managerial appointment, Ferguson replied:

“Yeah, you can never give up. Nine points behind Celtic, 11 behind Hearts — credit to Hearts, they’ve made a great start.”
