Before confirming his comeback, Yoane Wissa drops a cryptic three-word message

Eddie Howe will face plenty of questions when he addresses the media on Friday ahead of Newcastle’s Premier League trip to Everton. Fans will want answers on the club’s poor away form, Nick Pope’s position after another error, and whether Kieran Trippier is fit to bring his experience back into the side.

But the biggest focus is likely Yoane Wissa: the DR Congo striker has yet to play for Newcastle since his £55million deadline-day move from Brentford. Signed as the ideal replacement for Alexander Isak, Wissa suffered a knee injury just days later on international duty, stalling his career at St James’ Park before it began. Proposed return dates have passed, and while Newcastle desperately need reinforcements up front, the club is determined to be patient with the 29-year-old and not rush him back.

There were encouraging signs on Saturday, however. Wissa watched Newcastle’s win over Manchester City from the stands, then joined his teammates in the dressing room and on the pitch to celebrate—his closest contact with the turf since signing. Before coming down, he posted “I love you @nufc” on Instagram, a message that thrilled supporters concerned he might leave for the African Cup of Nations as soon as he’s fit. While that possibility remains, Newcastle hope to get him match-ready beforehand, and he may even opt out of the tournament. Howe stressed that the main challenge is Wissa’s fitness: “The big adaptation period now is his sharpness and ensuring he’s ready to play and execute what we need from him. He’s doing everything he can.”

The striker’s eventual return could transform Newcastle’s attack. “We hope so,” Howe admitted last week. “He’s got Premier League experience, and we’re working to get him ready to contribute for himself and his teammates.”
