Italian media allege that Newcastle United is attempting to derail the £43 million Sunderland transfer in a “bidding war.” Newcastle United has frequently been identified as a potential destination
for midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who has been frequently associated with a return to the Premier League by the Italian media. Newcastle has not expressed any interest in the matter; however, the connections date back to 2021, when Guendouzi was still ostensibly an Arsenal player.
Before embarking on loan stints at Hertha Berlin and Marseille, the Frenchman appeared in 82 matches for The Gunners over the course of two seasons. He subsequently became a permanent member of Marseille and, following an initial loan period, transferred to Lazio. Guendouzi has been selected for the French national team on 14 occasions, and he has scored twice.
The Italian media are associating the 26-year-old midfielder with a lucrative return to the Premier League, as his contract contains a £43million release clause that is set to expire in 2028. According to Corrierre della Sera, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, their Premier League counterparts, may be involved in a bidding war for Guendouzi.
Sunderland, who were recently promoted, were also linked with the midfielder. The Black Cats have strengthened their midfield by signing Habib Diarra from RC Strasbourg. However, they will remain active in the transfer market to further enhance their squad for Premier League football. The transfer window has not yet seen any significant activity from either Villa
or Newcastle, and it is likely that the rumours of a potential bidding war between the two over Guendouzi are exaggerated, as the majority of the attention has been directed towards Italy rather than the clubs themselves. Newcastle would logically seek to enhance their midfield options this summer following the acquisition of their primary objectives.
Eddie Howe would prefer to have additional midfield options, despite the fact that the first-choice midfield trio of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes, and Sandro Tonali is virtually untouchable. This is due to the increased number of Champions League matches and the potential for rotation. Lewis Miley is an alternative, but he is still only 19 years old.
Additionally, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff’s futures are uncertain following unimpressive 2024/25 campaigns on an individual basis. Newcastle does not prioritise central midfield at this time; however, it may become more prominent later in the transfer window. Newcastle is currently focused on securing agreements for their well-documented top targets as they approach a transfer breakthrough.
The acquisition of Burnley’s custodian, James Trafford, is currently under discussion. Newcastle and the 22-year-old have reached an agreement on personal terms; however, the agreement is contingent upon Burnley agreeing to a transfer fee. Additionally, the Magpies have initiated a new attempt to acquire Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for £55 million, and it is believed that an agreement is imminent.
