Manchester United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final to win the trophy.

By beating Manchester City 2-1, Manchester United won the 2024 FA Cup final and secured their spot in the Europa League for the following season. Because Chelsea dropped to the Conference League after the win, Newcastle United will not play in any European competitions next season. The Magpies will also be out of Europe altogether.

Manchester United knew that only a win against their local rivals would guarantee them a spot in the Europa League next season. Meanwhile, Newcastle United knew that a win for Manchester City was the only way to bring Conference League football to St. James’ Park for the first time ever next season.

Erik ten Hag’s team got off to a better start in the afternoon at Wembley, where it was sunny. They were very lucky to avoid a penalty call early on, though, when Lisandro Martinez pushed Erling Haaland in the penalty area. Manchester United, on the other hand, took over and scored the first goal through Alejandro Garnacho.

Garnacho took advantage of a mistake by Stefan Ortega and Josko Gvardiol to score by tapping the ball into an empty net. And nine minutes later, Kobbie Mainoo scored to double the lead after a fast counterattack.

Mateo Kovacic and Nathan Ake were replaced by Jeremy Doku and Manuel Akanji at halftime. The game went into the break with two goals down. It looked like that would work for the Citizens, but when Haaland’s shot hit the goal, it looked like it was a bad day for Manchester City and Newcastle United.

It was still going one way. Andre Onana made two great saves on long-range shots by Kyle Walker, and Julian Alvarez missed a great chance to get his team back into the game. It took a while, but City finally got back into the game when Doku’s powerful shot got past Onana in the Red Devils’ goal. However, that was just a relief.

Overall, City may have played their worst game of the season that afternoon, while the winners played their best 45 minutes of the season to achieve a win. On the other hand, Newcastle United will think about what could have been during the season, both on and off the field.
