Birmingham City approve defender’s transfer move

Alfons Sampsted has completed a permanent transfer away from Birmingham City, joining Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles.

The Iceland international departs St Andrew’s after 18 months with the Blues, having initially arrived from FC Twente on loan before making the move permanent last summer.

While he featured in Birmingham’s League One title-winning campaign, Sampsted was largely used as a squad player and never established himself as a regular starter under head coach Chris Davies.

In total, the 27-year-old made 31 appearances for Birmingham City, most of them from the bench. He did, however, earn two Championship starts over the Christmas period, lining up against Southampton and Watford.

Sampsted’s brief run in the starting XI came to an end when Davies reinstated Tomoki Iwata at right-back. Although the manager initially prevented Sampsted from leaving earlier in January due to a lack of defensive options, the return of Bright Osayi-Samuel from the Africa Cup of Nations opened the door for his exit.

The defender becomes the latest player to leave the club this month, following the departures of Lyndon Dykes, Keshi Anderson and Marc Leonard.
